Backup Email

20200520 Email can not be backed up directly from Office360 (it can from Outlook) but can be done by connecting an email client to the Outlook IMAP server. For example, establish a thunderbird IMAP connection and subscribe to the required folders. Each folder is then stored, by default, in a mbox file. (Maildir directories are also an option for thunderbird.) For example, connecting to an outlook IMAP server, the mbox files are located in something like  /.thunderbird/cd1450gf.default-release/ImapMail/outlook.office365.com/. There will be an INBOX file and a file for each subscribed folder, as well as various meta data files. We can use mutt to view the mbox files:

$ mutt -f INBOX
