20190315 LATEX and TEX are sophisticated document typesetting systems that encode traditional typesetting rules and knowledge into a programming, or markup, language. LATEX is a markup language where you edit text documents (using any editor of choice) and include mark-up to tell the formatter how to produce the final printed page. LATEX is available freely on most platforms and documents produced on one platform will be identical to that produced on another platform. The simplest way to install TEX and LATEX is through the TEXlive distribution currently maintained by Karl Reed and Norbert Preining, which runs on a vast variety of platforms.
One of my contributions to the LATEX community of the 1990's was the development of the TEX Catalogue as part of the CTAN team.
